The 3D version follows the recent success of Sonic, such as 2022’s Sonic Dream Team (an Apple Arcade exclusive) and Sonic Frontier. Sonic X Shadow Generations
Sonic X Shadow Generations is an upcoming update to Sonic Generations for consoles and PC developed by Sonic Team. It includes new features and introduces Shadow the Hedgehog as a playable character. The game will be released in Fall 2024, giving players the opportunity to experience additional content for Sonic Generations.
In this remaster, a new storyline called “Shadow Generations” is added, focusing on Shadow’s mission to stop the villain Black Doom from ruling the world. The game was first hinted at during Sony’s PlayStation State of Play live broadcast on January 31, 2024. It is planned to be launched on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Sonic X: Shadow Generations
In the game Sonic X Shadow Generations, the story unfolds as a character named Black Ruin returns and threatens to take over the world. The hedgehog hero Shadow is tasked with traveling through his own history and encountering old rivals in order to stop Black Ruin and save the world from his evil plans.
As Shadow embarks on this journey, players will explore his past adventures and face challenges from his early encounters. The storyline revolves around Shadow’s mission to defeat Black Doom, an alien overlord bent on conquering the world. Throughout the game, players will witness Shadow’s confrontations with various enemies, including moments when he faces off against characters such as Doom’s Eye, who previously appeared in Shadow the Hedgehog.

The overall goal is for Shadow to overcome these obstacles, defeat Black Destruction, and prevent the alien overlord from achieving his destructive ambitions, ensuring the world’s safety.
Sonic X Shadow Generations Development
Shadow the Hedgehog is a character who became popular after appearing in Sonic Adventure 2, and is also a recurring character in the Sonic series. Before the birth of Sonic X Shadow Generations, Shadow had released his own game in late 2005, but it received mostly negative reviews. In June 2023, Takashi Iizuka, head of the Sonic Team, proposed the idea of making a new game with Shadow as the protagonist. However, the development had not yet been officially confirmed.
The concept of Sonic X Shadow Generations is to remake a game from the 2010s, the second such remake after 2021’s Sonic Colors: Ultimate. Unlike Colors Ultimate, which was developed by Blind Squirrel Studios, Sonic X Shadow Generations was carefully crafted by Sonic Team.
On January 31, 2024, Sony officially announced Sonic X: Shadow Generations at the State of Play event. This upcoming game marks an important step in Shadow the Hedgehog’s return to the spotlight, and the Sonic Team will lead the game’s development.
