Many of the best quotes in Star Wars come from the franchise’s most prominent characters. Throughout the Star Wars movies and shows, the most important people in the galaxy far, far away have had some very important things to say, and they sometimes told other exactly who they were in a single line of dialogue.

From the most powerful Jedi in Star Wars to the most deadly Sith, the franchise’s characters have said quite a bit. Their quotes range from inspiring, soaring speeches during huge moments to small, funny lines shared between friends. There are even several main characters, like Chewbacca or R2-D2, whose only quotes are sounds or alien languages. Additionally, there are a few main characters who didn’t sum up their own personalities with a single line, but for the ones that did, their words serve as the perfect introduction to their Star Wars stories.

Star Wars 10 Best Quotes About The Force In The Movies & Shows

Star Wars is known for the many memorable quotes seen throughout the series, particularly as it pertains to the mystical energy field the Force.

25 Luke Skywalker

“I’ll never turn to the dark side. You failed, your highness. I am a Jedi. Like my father before me.”

Close

One of the most pivotal moments in Luke Skywalker’s life came during his final confrontation with Emperor Palpatine in Return of The Jedi. As he cast his lightsaber aside, Luke told the Emperor that he couldn’t be swayed to the dark side because he was a Jedi. This is the core of Luke’s character: he’s a Jedi, and though he may be tempted by the dark side at times, he always eventually chooses the light. This quote also highlights the emphasis Luke placed on family, especially with regard to Anakin Skywalker.

Luke Skywalker

The son of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Luke was brought up on the desert planet Tatooine. Initially mentored by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke fired the fateful shot that destroyed the Death Star, and he became a rebel hero. Despite the fears of Obi-Wan and Yoda, Luke’s faith in his father was proved well-founded when Vader returned to the light. With the Emperor defeated, Luke dedicated himself to bringing back the Jedi; his first attempt ended in tragedy due to Palpatine’s manipulations, but Luke’s legacy lives on in Rey.

24 Leia Organa

“Somebody has to save our skins. Into the garbage chute, flyboy!”

Close

Leia Organa is one of the most compelling characters in Star Wars for three main reasons that are highlighted by this quote. Leia was always willing and able to save herself and others, and she leaped into action at a moment’s notice. She was also a very sarcastic and sassy person, and she couldn’t help herself from giving a smart comment. Lastly, this quote also highlights Leia’s ability to think under pressure, a skill she relied on more and more as she gained responsibility in the Rebellion and Resistance.

Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars

Leia Organa

The daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Leia inherited her mother’s political skills and her father’s Force power. She was raised on Alderaan as a member of the royal family, and followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a senator who secretly worked alongside the Rebel Alliance. Alderaan’s destruction changed everything, and Leia became a leader in both the Rebel Alliance and its successor government, the New Republic. She served there for decades, eventually leaving to found the First Order when she sensed its darkness growing. Leia gave much for her ideals, but eventually gave her life to redeem her son Ben.

23 Han Solo

“Look, your worshipfulness, let’s get one thing straight, I take orders from just one person: Me.”

Close

Han Solo had some of the best character development of anyone in the original trilogy, starting out as a scoundrel who was loyal only to himself and ending as a hero of the Rebellion, a father, and a man who was willing to do the right thing. No one quote can really encapsulate all the different phases of Han’s life, but this one touches on a few big parts of his character. Han was just as sassy as Leia, and even after he had formally joined the rebellion, no one could stop him from doing what he wanted.

22 Lando Calrissian

“Everything you’ve heard about me is true.”

Close

Lando Calrissian was one thing above all else: he was cool. He was smooth, suave, and stylish, and the man lived a fascinating life. From his time as a gambler and smuggler to his time as Baron Administrator of Cloud City and his work with the Rebellion, Lando gained quite a reputation across the galaxy. This quote highlights that reputation and points out an interesting part of his character: no matter how crazy the story about Lando, there’s a very good chance it really happened.

The smooth-talking Lando Calrissian enjoyed a successful criminal career during the Dark Times of the Empire’s reign. Winning the title of Baron-Administrator of Cloud City, he settled there for a time – until Han Solo came asking for favors, pursued by the Empire. Lando initially betrayed Han, fearful of Darth Vader’s power, but became an important asset in the Rebel Alliance – and helped rescue his old friend too. Although Lando tried to settle down, his family was targeted by the First Order, and his daughter was kidnapped. Lando returned to action toward the end of the Resistance-First Order war.

21 Darth Vader

“I am not your failure, Obi-Wan. You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker – I did.”

Close

The transformation of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader has been one of the most interesting parts of the entire franchise for decades. This quote from Obi-Wan Kenobi hints at what really happened when he fell to the dark side, and when Vader took over. It’s a very dark and ominous quote about a man killing a version of himself, but it also hints at the deep tragedy of Darth Vader. Anakin, of course, chose to become Darth Vader, but Vader also hijacked his life for decades.

20 Emperor Palpatine

“Power! Unlimited power!”

Close

Simple as it may be, this quote highlights the essence of Emperor Palpatine. His entire life was dedicated to one thing and one thing alone: power. Palpatine dedicated every moment he was alive to gaining power, keeping it, or regaining it. As the essence of evil in Star Wars, Palpatine’s entire role in the franchise was laid out by a single quote in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

19 Anakin Skywalker

“Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi’s life.”

Close

Just as Darth Vader was complicated, so too was Anakin Skywalker. He was a deeply flawed man, but he also had very good intentions as he made his descent into the dark side. This quote highlights both his flaws and his ideals: Anakin had the right goal, of practicing unconditional love, but he misunderstood what that concept really means. Because he didn’t have that understanding, Anakin perverted the idea of unconditional love until it became an obsession, which led to his downfall.

Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader Split By a Lightning Bolt

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader

Conceived by the will of the Force itself, Anakin Skywalker was the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring the Force into balance. Anakin struggled to balance competing attachments to the Jedi Order and his wife Padmé Amidala, and ultimately fell to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. For years he served as Palpatine’s right hand man, but he was ultimately redeemed by the faith of his son, Luke Skywalker. Now a Force Ghost, Anakin continues to act as an agent of balance.

18 Padmé Amidala

“Anakin, you’re breaking my heart. You’re going down a path I can’t follow.”

Close

Padmé Amidala was a good woman, but she loved the wrong man. By the end of Revenge of the Sith, Padmé realized that she was losing Anakin, and even though she loved him, her morals were too strong to follow him to the dark side. Padmé had one of the strongest moral codes of any character in Star Wars, and while there were other moments that highlighted that, this quote did it best. She stood by what she knew was right, even though it cost her life.

17 Obi-Wan Kenobi

“If you define yourself by the power to take life, the desire to dominate, to possess…then you have nothing.”

Close

Obi-Wan is one of the best examples of what a Jedi is supposed to be. He dedicated every part of his life to serving the light side of the Force, to standing for peace and justice, and for spreading wisdom instead of hatred. This quote from Star Wars Rebels highlights how Obi-Wan’s mind worked, and how his deep understanding of the dark side helped him stay a good Jedi and a good man. He saw what the dark side wrought, and he was able to pass that lesson on to Luke Skywalker.

16 Yoda

“Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not.”

Close

If the Jedi are known as wise, it is largely because of Yoda. His role in The Empire Strikes Back, as Luke’s teacher, highlighted just how many nuggets of wisdom he had to share. The diminutive green alien didn’t seem like much of a Jedi – Luke said that very thing – but he was one of the greatest and wisest servants of the light side there ever was. As his quote suggests, appearances are only part of a person’s story, and Yoda had so much more power as a Jedi than his stature hinted at.

15 Rey Skywalker

“I am all the Jedi.”

Close

Rey Skywalker’s journey through the Star Wars sequel trilogy was all about living up to the Skywalker legacy and learning how to carry the Jedi forward. That makes her quote at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker incredibly poignant: Rey was never alone on that quest, she had generations of Jedi helping her. It also emphasizes that Rey is ready to live up to her legacy and become the future of Star Wars.

14 Kylo Ren

“Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to.”

Close

For most of the sequel trilogy, Kylo Ren had a very strained relationship with his past, and a very twisted view of how to deal with it. As an adult, he spent much of his time trying to, as his quote suggests, kill the past. It was most of his motivation for the entire trilogy, and why he traveled so far down the path to the dark side. Kylo Ren thought that if he could escape his past, he could finally be free from the burden of his legacy and the expectations of his parents and uncle.

The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Ben was manipulated by Palpatine through the Force for most of his life, influenced toward the dark side of the Force. A misstep by Luke Skywalker ultimately left Ben feeling he had no choice but to embrace the dark side, and he became Kylo Ren, a key figure in the First Order. Kylo Ren’s heart remained deeply divided, however, even after he ascended to become Supreme Leader of the First Order. He was ultimately redeemed by Rey, with whom he shared a remarkable Force bond, and by the love of his parents.

13 Finn

“I was raised to fight. For the first time I had something to fight for.”

Close

Finn was taken to be a stormtrooper for the First Order when he was just a baby. The majority of his life was defined by his service to them, and they stripped away much of his identity. It wasn’t until Star Wars: The Force Awakens that Finn finally got an identity of his own, and he then spent the rest of the sequel trilogy trying to give that identity meaning. This quote shows the character development Finn went through, and how he finally found a way to separate himself from the First Order.

John Boyega as Finn in Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker

Finn

Brainwashed as a stormtrooper for the First Order, Finn was able to resist his conditioning – likely due to his Force-sensitivity. Initially unwilling to ally with the Resistance, he nonetheless eventually chose to side with them, and became a good friend to both Rey and Poe Dameron. Finn led a squad of ex-stormtroopers during the fateful Battle of Exegol, a conflict that saw him finally embrace the Force.

12 Poe Dameron

“What our mothers and fathers fought for, we will not let die. Not today. Today we make our last stand. For the galaxy. For Leia. For everyone we’ve lost.”

Close

In The Force Awakens and for much of Star Wars:The Last Jedi, Poe was a hotheaded pilot. He had a problem with authority, and he thought he knew best in every situation. By The Rise of Skywalker, however, Poe had grown into a leader of the Resistance, and he had learned to accept responsibility and work together with his fellow members. Poe’s quote highlights how much he grew over the course of the sequel trilogy, as well as the fight he dedicated so much of himself to.

11 Ahsoka Tano

“I Am No Jedi.”

Close

Ahsoka Tano was trained by Anakin and the Jedi, but she decided to leave the Order after a traumatic experience. The reason this quote captures her personality is because Ahsoka spent much of her adult life trying to find out who she was without the Jedi. When she said this, she had been through so much, and she learned that being Ahsoka was more powerful to her than being a Jedi. It also highlights that Ahsoka wasn’t bogged down by the same problems many Jedi faced, and she lived by her own rules, not theirs.

Close

Kanan Jarrus was one of the Jedi who survived Order 66 when he was a child, and the Jedi Purge scarred him for a very long time. Despite the trauma he faced and the painful memories he carried, though, Kanan still grew to be one of the greatest Jedi in Star Wars. This quote is a sign of one of the things that made Kanan so great: he chose to be better. Whenever the chips were down and someone needed help, Kanan was ready to give it, even if it cost him his life.

9 Ezra Bridger

“I couldn’t have wished for a better family. I can’t wait to come home.”

Close

Throughout Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger struggled with the idea of family. His parents were killed for being early opponents of the Empire, and he was left to fend for himself on the streets of Lothal. Then, Ezra found a new family in the crew of the Ghost. The crew was deeply important to Ezra, and he loved them dearly, but he delivered this quote in a message after essentially exiling himself to save them. It’s proof of how Ezra would do anything for the people he called family, and of how well he learned what Kanan had to teach him.

Hera Syndulla was a rebel, through and through. She was one of the earliest members of the Rebel Alliance, and she spent much of her adult life fighting the Empire any way she could. This quote shows why Hera undertook her life’s work: not for revenge, but because she had hope that the future would be brighter than the past. 7 Sabine Wren

“That might be the Mandalorian way. But it’s not my way. Not anymore.”

Close

A major part of Sabine Wren’s character was her heritage as a Mandalorian. She wore Mandalorian armor, she fought for her people’s freedom from the Empire, and she blamed herself for not doing more to stop the Purge of Mandalore. This quote, however, showed a critical part of Sabine’s relationship with Mandalore. The old warrior ways of her people weren’t more important to her than her own values, and she valued mercy over violence. Sabine was proud of her Mandalorian heritage, but she valued what she thought was right more.

6 Din Djarin

Close

Like many other characters in Star Wars, Din Djarin went through quite a bit of character development over the course of The Mandalorian. He started out as a cold-blooded bounty hunter whos only allegiance was to the Children of the Watch. After meeting Grogu and learning to care for him like a son, though, Din softened, and he found several more friends across the galaxy.
