Beginning with the appearance of Boba Fett in the Star Wars Holiday Special, Mandalorians have become a beloved part of the Star Wars galaxy, and their importance has only grown in recent years. As the first Star Wars character to appear in Mandalorian armor, Boba Fett paved the way for the greatest warriors in the galaxy. These armored warriors are proud to call Mandalore their homeworld, in addition to the moon Concordia and other planets in Mandalorian space, such as Kalevala and Krownest. Though in canon, Boba Fett does not consider himself to be a Mandalorian, his legacy lives on through the Mandalorians who have since followed in his footsteps. It would be impossible to speak about Mandalorians and not include Grogu, known more fondly as “Baby Yoda,” though his inclusion on this list may also be surprising for some. It’s The Mandalorian season 3 that firmly establishes Grogu as a true Mandalorian after the former Jedi youngling chooses to remain with his Mandalorian adoptive father, Din Djarin, rather than pursue Jedi training with Luke Skywalker. The Mandalorian season 3 ending officially declares Grogu a Mandalorian apprentice under his father’s teachings, earning him the name “Din Grogu.”

Despite how beloved he may be, Grogu still has much more to prove as a Mandalorian. Though he has certainly proven himself in battle, with him being a key part of Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze’s fight against Moff Gideon for Mandalore, Grogu has yet to receive any proper Mandalorian training. Now that he’s an apprentice, he will certainly have the opportunity to do so, and Din Djarin will know the best way to mesh Grogu’s Force powers with Mandalorian skills. Until then, however, Grogu has yet to grow into his Mandalorian potential, placing him in the tenth spot.

Grogu

Grogu is a former Jedi youngling who is now training as a Mandalorian apprentice under his adopted father, Din Djarin. A survivor of Order 66, Grogu was hunted by the Empire for his blood amidst their cloning experimentation. Rescued by Din after initially being his bounty, Grogu went on to be trained briefly by Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Padawan, but has ultimately chosen the path of the Mandalorians instead to remain with his father. Grogu is now traversing the galaxy with Din to fight the Imperial Remnant and learn the Mandalorian Way.

An influential Mandalorian of his time, Fenn Rau’s story is one with quite a few ups and downs. Rau leads the Mandalorian Protectors, a group that fights alongside the Galactic Republic and the Jedi during the Clone Wars until the Galactic Empire comes to power. Rau swears his allegiance and that of his Protectors to the new regime, and for many years, he and his men protect the Mandalorian colony of Concord Dawn. They monitor the planet for rebel activity, which eventually gets Rau caught up in the activities of the Phoenix rebel cell.

After a year of imprisonment by the fledgling Rebel Alliance and the death of his Protectors at the hands of Gar Saxon and the Empire, Rau is inspired to fully join the Rebellion, thanks to Sabine Wren. Rau then gains his true Mandalorian spirit back, where he supports Sabine at every turn – on one occasion even gifting her vambraces for her armor – and even aids her and her Mandalorian allies to free Mandalore from Imperial rule. While his story is an inspiring one, Rau has yet to be even more fleshed out, placing him at ninth on this list.

The story of Paz Vizsla is both tumultuous and tragic, given the arc he takes over the course of The Mandalorian. First introduced as a reinforcement to Din Djarin on Nevarro as a part of his tribe, the Children of the Watch, Paz is a proud member of the powerful Clan Vizsla who isn’t afraid to challenge the beliefs and choices of those around him if need be. After surviving an ordeal on Nevarro with the Imperial Remnant that leads to much of their covert’s decimation, Paz helps the Armorer rebuild on Glavis and another unnamed planet.

The adoption of his foundling Ragnar, along with Din Djarin’s own sense of honor, help motivate Paz to become one of Mandalore’s most selfless warriors.

It takes a while for Paz to overcome his sense of pride, on one occasion even unsuccessfully dueling Din Djarin for the Darksaber to claim it as his own. Another member of the esteemed Clan Vizsla, Pre Vizsla has a very different legacy than Paz, one that is unfortunately mostly full of strife, division, and a hunger for power. As the leader of Death Watch, Vizsla is directly responsible for some incredibly cruel acts that take place on an otherwise peaceful Mandalore during the Clone Wars. Vizsla is even responsible for placing Darth Maul in a prime position to seize the throne of Mandalore, an act that leads to his death and the deaths of many others.

Vizsla, however, is an incredibly iconic Mandalorian, especially as the first person to ever be seen wielding the Darksaber. Played by Jon Favreau, it’s Pre Vizsla who indirectly leads to the creation of The Mandalorian, due to the interest this experience gave Favreau to pursue more Mandalorian-based stories. The Death Watch is also a critical part of Mandalore’s history, as the group eventually fractures into splinter factions that include Din Djarin’s Children of the Watch tribe. His darker history, however, places him in the seventh spot.

Much like his son, Jango Fett is a complicated Mandalorian figure in Star Wars history. Though his Legends story ties him closely to Mandalore and its culture, canon does little to show this, aside from some lore established in The Mandalorian. Jango is, like Din Djarin, a Mandalorian foundling, and he even fights in the Mandalorian Civil Wars – both of which are inspired by his Legends backstory. Otherwise, however, Jango is quite withdrawn from Mandalore as he instead focuses on his bounty hunting career and the creation of the clone army.

Despite this, there’s no denying how incredibly iconic Jango Fett is. Created as a direct response to Boba’s popularity in the original Star Wars trilogy, Jango is a key part of Star Wars history, with his face easily being one of the most recognizable in the entire galaxy thanks to the clone army created in his likeness. Jango is extremely famed for his fighting and bounty hunting abilities, which earns him the opportunity to become the model for the Republic’s army. His sudden death at Mace Windu’s hands leaves a lifelong impact on Boba, securing him in the sixth spot.

5 The Armorer Is A Resilient Leader

Though there is still much left to learn about her, the Armorer is such an important Mandalorian figure that she is known only by her title, not her name. As the leader of the Children of the Watch, the Armorer is responsible for the safety and security of her people in the years following the Purge of Mandalore. Her position within their society is extremely sacred, particularly for the Children of the Watch, who value Mandalorian beskar and weapons as a key part of their religion. The Armorer is a forthright yet firm leader, always holding tight to her tenets.

The Armorer, however, has come a long way in her beliefs. Though she excommunicates Din Djarin from the Children of the Watch for removing his helmet, she comes to accept Bo-Katan Kryze and other Mandalorians who remove their helmets, much of which is set in motion by Din Djarin bringing Bo-Katan to their covert. Having proven her skill in battle, with her only weapons being the same tools she uses to shape beskar, the Armorer is all around one of the strongest Mandalorians to date, in a physical and a metaphorical sense – setting her at fifth on this list.

4 Tarre Vizsla Is The First Mandalorian Jedi

Though he has yet to make a true appearance in Star Wars, the legacy of Tarre Vizsla precedes him. As the first Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre is able to bring together two groups of people who have a long history of warring against one another. His existence alone is a challenge to years of battles between the Jedi and the Mandalorians, and he’s able to bring a sense of harmony between the two groups if only for a brief moment in history.

What’s most notable about Tarre Vizsla and his legacy is the creation of the Darksaber. Easily the planet’s most famed weapon, Tarre’s Darksaber is a lightsaber that takes on unique features closely associated with Mandalorian weapons, from its flat blade to its beskar hilt. After Tarre’s death, this blade is stolen by Clan Vizsla from the Jedi Temple and takes on connotations of its own, such as dueling for the right to earn it and a claim to the Mandalorian throne. This legacy cements Tarre as one of the top Mandalorians, though three others still surpass him.

Following in Tarre Vizsla’s footsteps, Sabine Wren has also become a Mandalorian Jedi, though this title is still incredibly rare in the Star Wars galaxy. Sabine, however, is known more for her contributions to the early Rebellion, with her and her fellow Phoenix rebel cell doing much of the work that ultimately leads to the greater Rebel Alliance effort. Sabine’s Mandalorian family tree and history are rich, with her mother, Ursa Wren, being one of Bo-Katan Kryze’s Nite Owls during the Clone Wars, and she carries that with her even amidst her rebel activity.

When it comes to a Mandalorian legacy in the Star Wars TV shows, no one has one quite like Bo-Katan Kryze’s. A part of Mandalore’s royal line, Bo-Katan has one of the most transformative arcs in all of Star Wars history. Under her sister, Satine Kryze’s, shadow, Bo-Katan yearns for action, which leads her to join Pre Vizsla’s Death Watch – pitting her directly against her pacifist sister, the duchess of Mandalore. After Vizsla and her sister are both killed by Maul, however, Bo-Katan breaks away and unites forces with Ahsoka Tano to reclaim their homeworld in the Siege of Mandalore.

After Mandalore falls to the Empire, Bo-Katan returns with Sabine Wren to liberate the planet, but her rule doesn’t last long. The Night of a Thousand Tears leads to the Great Purge and Bo-Katan losing the Darksaber to Moff Gideon. She, however, makes a comeback in many different ways. With the help of Din Djarin, she sees past her doubts and her prejudices of other Mandalorian groups and unites all Mandalorians under the Darksaber to take back their planet once and for all. Now, Bo-Katan will make her mark as a leader once again, placing her behind only one other.

There’s no doubt about it that Din Djarin is Star Wars’ best, and most iconic, Mandalorian to date. As the titular character of The Mandalorian, Din is the only one of his kind who people recognize under the general title of “the Mandalorian.” Din’s story is a heartbreaking yet inspiring one, beginning with his parents sacrificing their lives to protect him before the Mandalorians rescue him and take him in as a foundling. Over the years, he makes a name for himself in the bounty hunting world, until his entire life changes when he comes across Grogu.

Din still has a lot of Star Wars storytelling ahead of him, but he’s already become the galaxy’s best Mandalorian in the years following his debut.

Din Djarin

Din Djarin was once a lone bounty who has since tasked himself with raising his adopted son and Mandalorian apprentice, Grogu. Born on Aq Vetina and raised on Concordia by the Mandalorian faction the Children of the Watch, Din is an orphan and Mandalorian foundling who has risked both his life and his Mandalorian Creed to protect Grogu. Djarin has become an important part of the galaxy’s fight against the Imperial Remnant that lingers in the wake of the Empire’s fall, as he is now working under-the-table for the fledgling New Republic’s rangers.
