Starry Sky

Starfield is a 2023 action role-playing game created by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. Players embark on a journey of space exploration and join a group of adventurers to find mysterious artifacts scattered throughout the galaxy. The game takes place in an open world environment within the Milky Way, with both fictional and real planetary systems.

Starfield is a space-themed game that is Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in 25 years. Director Todd Howard likened it to “Skyrim in space”. Starfield uses the Creation Engine, which entered active development after the release of Fallout 4 in 2015, albeit with extensive modifications for the game’s procedural generation system.

Despite multiple delays since its 2018 announcement, Starfield was finally released on Windows and Xbox Series X/S on September 6, 2023. The game was critically acclaimed, receiving praise for its expansive open world, intriguing settings, and memorable soundtrack. However, players and critics were more divided about its story and exploration elements.

How to play Starry Sky

Starfield is an action role-playing video game that allows players to switch seamlessly between first-person and third-person perspectives. The game is set in a vast open world in the Milky Way, containing both fictional and real planetary systems, including more than 1,000 planets, numerous moons, and a variety of space stations to explore and land on.

Procedurally generated landscapes are influenced by star systems, atmospheres, and points of interest, complementing modded and handcrafted content. New Atlantis is the largest fictional city in the game, developed by Bethesda and is a famous urban center. While exploring the game world, players interact with non-player characters (NPCs), some of whom can join the player’s party.

These NPCs engage in combat, carry items, act as conversation intermediaries, and provide insights into the player’s choices. Crew members can be stationed at player-built outposts, each with unique skills and abilities. Additionally, certain recruitable NPCs can form romantic relationships with the player. The game starts with character customization, allowing players to design their silent protagonist by selecting body type, appearance, facial features, background, and traits.

Background choices grant players three initial skills, while as the game progresses, players can unlock additional traits that offer both advantages and challenges. For example, the Introversion trait increases stamina when traveling alone, but decreases stamina when accompanied by a companion. Traits can be changed through quests or specific actions. As players progress, they gain experience, level up, and gain abilities in five different skill trees: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Technology. Skill increases are achieved by completing associated challenges.

Twenty years after the Colonial War, an uneasy peace exists between the United Colonies and the Freestar Group. Players take on the role of a space miner employed by the Argos Extractors, commissioned by the renowned galactic explorer group Constellation, to embark on a mission to unearth a mysterious artifact with a gravitational anomaly. A time and space perspective follows the extraction process, propelling players on an intriguing journey. After fending off attacks by the Crimson Fleet, delivering the artifact to the Constellation Inn in New Atlantis and joining their mission, players ally themselves with factions such as the UC Vanguard and the Freestar Rangers.

Throughout the quest to find the artifact, players encounter anomalies that are tied to the presence of a more powerful artifact. Activating an ancient temple grants players unique powers. Players join Walter Stroud, a member of the Constellation, to retrieve an artifact from the Neon and confront an unknown entity known as the “Starborn.” The Starborn’s need for the artifact escalates the Constellation’s mission, introducing competition. To expand scanning capabilities, players assist in restoring The Eye, but are faced with a critical choice of defending The Eye or the Constellation’s cabin, which results in the death of one member.

Following clues, the Constellation confronts the Hunters and the Emissaries, and discovers the human origins of the Starborn from a parallel universe. The Continuum, the center of the universe and the gateway to parallel worlds, becomes the coveted prize. Excited about exploring parallel universes, the Constellation enters into a competition with the Starborn. After retrieving the remaining artifacts, the player decides whether to help the Hunters, the Emissaries, or remain neutral. Regardless, the player confronts the Starborn at the Buried Temple, reaches the Continuum, and encounters parallel versions of themselves. This version suggests that entering the Continuum will transform the player into a Starborn, leaving their native universe and restarting the storyline in a parallel universe without property or relationships.
