Stephen James Merchant (born 24 November 1974) is a versatile English comedian, actor, director and writer, best known for his work with Ricky Gervais.
Merchant played a key role as co-writer and co-director of the critically acclaimed British television comedy series The Office (2001-2003), which received widespread critical acclaim and became a cultural phenomenon.
His creative collaboration with Gervais extended to other successful projects, including co-writing, co-directing and co-starring in Extras (2005-2007) and Life Is Short (2011-2013). The trio hosted various formats of The Ricky Gervais Show with Karl Pilkington, winning a Sony Bronze Award for the radio version.
