Tekken 8

Tekken 8 is a fighting game released on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Arika, it is the eighth canon entry in the Tekken series. The story, titled “Dark Awakening”, takes place six months after the previous game and focuses on the final conflict between Kazuya Mishima and his son Jin Kazama. The game introduces 32 characters, each of whom contributes to the story.

Announced at Evo 2022 in August 2022 and officially unveiled at Sony’s State of Play event in September, Tekken 8 is developed using Unreal Engine 5. It incorporates new elements such as the “heat” system and “tornado” strikes. Online modes include arcade missions, including tournaments, avatars, and special in-game currency. The game was tested for stability and demoed in December 2023.

The first season pass (including downloadable content and characters) was available during the pre-order period. Upon release, Tekken 8 was widely praised for its evolution of the series and radical gameplay, with some calling it the best game since Tekken 3.

Tekken 8 Gameplay

Tekken 8 retains the familiar fighting game style of its predecessors. Producer Katsuhiro Harada emphasized a more aggressive gameplay style, introducing the “Heat” system. In “Heat” mode, characters deal chip damage, gain extra moves, and change some move properties, encouraging proactive attacks. Timers stop with strategic moves. Guarding against heavy attacks or characters in “Heat” will deal chip damage, but unlike previous games, recoverable health can only be restored by attacking opponents.

The game has undergone a technical update, revising the “Rage” system to “Heat Smash”. The “Spiral” mechanic was replaced with a “Tornado” extender, which causes the player to be trapped in the ground. Some stages have hazards, such as destructible walls and floors, and explosive interactions that will send injured opponents flying.

Iron Fist Story

Six months after Heihachi Mishima’s death, Jin, Russ, and Lee ambush Kazuya in New York. Jin loses control of his demons during the fight. Kazuya announces a new Iron Fist Tournament, threatening to destroy the losing nation.

During the preliminaries, the recovering Jin fights Lars and discovers that he has lost his demonic powers. In Japan, he meets Reina, a descendant of Mishima, and is offered a spot in the tournament. Reina joins Jin, hiding her true intentions.

Meanwhile, Zaffina warns Claudio to beware of Kazuya. Leo learns about Azazel and the Devil Gene from their father. At the Rome Tournament, Lars seeks support from the United Nations, and Claudio, Zaffina, and Kozune infiltrate. Kazuya manipulates events to revive Azazel and become a true demon.

Jin believes the answers lie in the Kazama Sanctuary. Yggdrasil, the UN forces, Leroy, and Reiner battle Kazuya’s forces. Jin falls into a deep sleep. Faced with his demonic self, Jin accepts reality and regains control. Jin saves Lars from Kazuya’s attack and removes the demon gene in the final battle.
