Palworld is an action-adventure survival game from Japanese developer Pocket Pair. In this game, players will find themselves in an open world filled with unique animal creatures called “companions”. The fun begins when players can fight and capture these companions for various purposes, including building bases, exploring the world, and engaging in battles. Whether playing alone or with up to 32 players on a server, Palworld offers a dynamic gaming experience. It first arrived on the gaming scene in 2021 and officially launched in Early Access on Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in January 2024.

Palworld is known for its humorous plot, earning the nickname “Pokémon with guns” for its comedic premise involving guns and buddies. The game’s appeal isn’t limited to combat, as players can use their creatures as food or assign them to work in mines and factories. In just three days of early access, Palworld sold over 4 million copies, showing just how popular it is.

How to Play Palworld

Palworld’s gameplay blends peaceful coexistence with thrilling adventure. Players can choose to live in harmony with mysterious companions or risk their lives to fend off ruthless poaching gangs. The versatile companions can be used for a variety of purposes, from fending off danger to working on a farm or in a factory. Interestingly, players can even choose to sell or eat the creatures, adding additional choices and consequences to the game.

Survival is a key aspect of Palworld, and the game is set in a challenging environment where food is scarce and the threat of poachers makes every decision crucial. Exploring this world requires careful choices, and players may find themselves making difficult decisions, such as eating their own pals, in order to survive. The gameplay extends to exploration, allowing players to ride their pals to travel by land, sea, and sky. Constructing buildings, using pals for production and farming, and delving into dungeons with them are all part of the dynamic gameplay. In addition, multiplayer support allows cooperative adventures for up to 4 players in online co-op game modes and up to 32 players on dedicated servers, promoting a social and interactive gaming experience.

Palworld Development

Palworld is developed and published by Pocket Pair, an independent company based in Shinkawa, Tokyo. The game is their second Early Access open-world survival project after Craftopia, drawing inspiration from popular games like Minecraft and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and incorporating familiar gameplay mechanics.

Pocket Pair CEO Takuro Mizobe said the concept for Palworld was inspired by Ark: Survival Evolved, a game featuring dinosaurs as monster companions. The survival mechanics and in-game quests were inspired by Rust, while the creature design was influenced by the Dragon Quest series. Notably, early in development, they decided to switch from Unity (the engine behind Pocket Pair’s earlier projects) to Unreal Engine. The development process was significant, with the game’s budget exceeding 1 billion yen, and the company hiring over 40 people and expanding the team for this ambitious project.
