Analysis of the ending of The Catcher in the Rye
At the end of Watchmen Were Spies, Paul Rudd’s character Moe Berg faces a critical decision: whether to kill Werner Heisenberg, the German physicist believed to be helping Germany build the atomic bomb. Moe is commissioned by the U.S. government to kill Heisenberg in order to prevent Germany from winning the war.

As the story unfolds, Moh attended a party in Zurich hosted by Heisenberg’s friend Paul Scherrer. Heisenberg became suspicious of Moh’s intentions, especially when he heard the clicking of Moh’s gun. However, instead of confronting Heisenberg immediately, Moh talked with him, discussing chess and other topics at the party.
Eventually, Moi confronted Heisenberg on the bridge and stated his intention to kill him. However, before Moi could act, a German spy attempted to shoot Moi. As things turned out, Moi was able to kill the spy in self-defense. Moi then questioned Heisenberg about his involvement in building the atomic bomb for Germany.
Heisenberg’s answer convinced Moi that Heisenberg was not actively helping the Germans in the war. Relying on his intuition and his ability to read people’s minds, Moi decided to release Heisenberg. This decision ultimately saved Heisenberg’s life and prevented Moi from carrying out the assassination.
In fact, Mo Berg was indeed sent to assassinate Heisenberg during World War II. However, since Germany did not have an atomic bomb at the time, Mo Berg did not have to carry out the assassination mission. After the war, Heisenberg assisted the Allies in revealing the location of Germany’s heavy water reserves, contributing to the Allied victory.

Paul Rudd’s performance as Moe Berg did a good job of capturing his easygoing demeanor and intellectual side. However, some felt that the character was still too mysterious to get to know his inner thoughts and feelings. Supporting actors, including Jeff Daniels and Paul Giamatti, were praised for their performances, but many of them had limited screen time, leaving audiences wanting more.
Opinions on the film were mixed. Some viewers appreciated the film’s historical setting and portrayal of Berg’s espionage, while others felt that the film lacked depth in character development and storytelling. While The Catcher in the Rye has its strengths, such as great performances and production values, it also has weaknesses, namely, it falls short in fully developing its main and supporting characters.
