As Aaron digs deeper into the case, suspicion grows among the townspeople, leading to a complex web of secrets. Initially suspicious of Luke’s ex-girlfriend Gretchen, Aaron later discovers there are financial problems at the school where Luke’s wife Karen works. After careful investigation, he discovered that the school’s principal, Scott Whitlam, had embezzled school funds to pay off gambling debts. Scott murdered Karen and her family to cover up his actions.
The climax culminates in a confrontation between Aaron, local police officer Greg Racco and Scott Whitlam, who threatens to set himself on fire. Aaron and Laco step in to prevent potential disaster. As the truth comes to light, Aaron is hailed as a hero for stopping Scott’s dangerous behavior.
However, the film takes a poignant turn when Aaron discovers Ellie’s hidden bag in the jungle. Inside, he finds Ellie’s diary, revealing her plans to escape her abusive father, Mal Deacon. After the tragedy, it was discovered that Mal had pushed Ellie into the river, causing her death. Alan left the town with Ellie’s memory and walked along the dry river bed.
The film deftly weaves together multiple subplots to create a compelling narrative that explores Luke’s murder and Ellie’s tragic death. With strong performances, especially from Eric Bana, and an evocative depiction of a drought-stricken town, Drought delivers a gripping and emotionally resonant ending.

Luke was accused of killing his wife and son before committing suicide, leaving only his infant daughter behind. Haunted by his past, Falk reluctantly agrees to investigate the crime.
Flashbacks reveal Falk’s troubled history in the town, as he was once suspected of involvement in the death of his girlfriend Ellie. Faced with the dissatisfaction of the townspeople, Falk teamed up with local police officer Greg Racco to investigate Luke’s death. They found inconsistencies, such as the use of different shotgun shells.

Clues lead Falk to suspect that Allie’s cousin Grant may be interested in purchasing the Hudler family’s farm. Through interviews and discoveries, Falk unravels a web of secrets, including an affair between Luke and Karen’s co-worker Gretchen. As Falk pieced the puzzle together, he uncovered financial problems and the corrupt practices of Whitlam, the school’s principal.
The investigation intensified, culminating in a confrontation with Whitlam, who confessed to murder to cover up his fraud. A dramatic scene ensued when Whitlam attempted to set himself on fire, but Falk and Lacko intervened, getting injured in the process.
After the case is closed, Falk clears Luke’s name, and the film ends with Ellie’s tragic past being revealed. Falk finds Ellie’s diary, revealing her father’s abuse and tragic death. The story ends with Falk saying goodbye to Ellie, taking the evidence to clear his name, and walking away along the now-dry river bed. The film weaves a story of mystery, redemption, and confronting the ghosts of the past.
