Finals gameplay

In the Grand Finals, you’ll experience a virtual battle game similar to the TV show, with a virtual crowd and hosts providing commentary inspired by movies like The Hunger Games and Gladiator (2000).

The main mode, Cashout, requires teams of three to complete tasks, such as opening vaults and delivering items to designated locations, similar to a game of capture the flag. Game currency can be accumulated by defeating opponents, completing tasks, and performing well in combat.

Players can choose between a “light”, “medium” or “heavy” character, each with different abilities and weapons. However, the game allows for customization of weapons and equipment, allowing for a variety of gameplay strategies.

The game fosters creativity by offering dynamic elements such as destructible environments, changing weather and time of day conditions, and flexible team composition. In addition, the arena features interactive elements such as throwable objects and resurrection mechanics, adding depth to the gaming experience.

Finals Development

Stockholm-based Embark Studios released its first games, The Finals and Arc Raiders. One developer noted that the game’s destructible environments revolutionized players’ thinking as they found creative ways to exploit this freedom, such as using rocket launchers to create openings instead of traditional doors. To ensure smooth gameplay, the game’s servers manage the calculations for environmental destruction.

The Finals was initially announced for PC in August 2022, and was later expanded to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Before the official release, a closed beta was conducted from March 7 to March 21, 2023, and then from June 14 to June 21. Subsequently, an open beta lasted from October 26 to November 5, and was accessible to all interested players.

The Finals was first revealed on December 7, 2023, during the 2023 Game Awards event. However, server issues arose after the launch, prompting the developers to temporarily restrict player access to the game.
