Content and bug fixes

  • Game exhibition activities

    • Disable the “Dead Go Boom” game show event

      • Developer Notes: We feel this activity is currently too punishing for melee users, so we are temporarily disabling it. We hope to bring it back to the game at some point in the future after a redesign.

  • user interface

  • Internet Phone

    • Set VoIP to be enabled by default on PC and set Push To Talk as the default input (existing players)

    • Set VoIP to be enabled by default on consoles and set voice activation as default input (existing players)

      • Developer Notes: We want to encourage more teamwork during matches, and enabling VoIP for all players is part of that effort. Players can disable VoIP via settings. We previously made this change for new players in the 1.5 update, with positive results!

Finals gameplay

In Finals, people compete in a virtual battle game show broadcast on television. During the game, holographic crowds can be seen, and hosts comment on the teams and the game. Developer Embark Studios was inspired by The Hunger Games and Gladiator (2000).

The game has different modes where 3 or 4 teams play in a “freestyle” style. Players choose a character based on the “light”, “medium” or “heavy” class, each with different speed and size. Each class has unique weapons, moves and abilities. Light characters are fast but have low health, medium characters are balanced, and heavy characters are durable but less maneuverable.

The game encourages players to be creative and play through the changing terrain, weather conditions, and time of day. Players can pick up and throw objects such as barrels, some of which explode on impact. Buildings can be destroyed, and players can use “slime guns” and “slime grenades” to create temporary structures. When players are defeated, they turn into statues, which teammates can carry and revive. In quick games, players can respawn as many times as they want, but in tournament mode, they have a limited number of respawn coins.
