The National

The National is a rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed in New York City in 1999. The band consists of lead vocalist Matt Berninger, guitarist and keyboardist Aaron and Bryce Dessner, and bassist and drummer Scott and Bryan Devendorf. Matt Berninger’s wife, Carin Besser, is not a member of the band, but has been writing lyrics with him since 2007.

In 2001, they released their debut album, The National, on Brassland Records. After Aaron’s brother Bryce joined them, they released Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers in 2003. After signing with Beggars Banquet Records, they gained attention with Alligator in 2005, and then released Boxer in 2007 and High Violet in 2010. 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me earned them a Grammy nomination.

Their 2017 album Sleep Well Beast won them a Grammy Award. In 2019, I Am Easy to Find was released. Their ninth album First Two Pages of Frankenstein was released in 2023 and reached number one on Billboard’s AAA and Rock charts. Five of their albums were nominated for NME’s 2013 list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” by music writer Laura Snapes.
