The Winter King Season 1 Episode 2 Review
After Mordred’s death, we watched as High King of Avalon Uther (Eddie Marsan) banished Arthur (Ian de Caestecker) and chose a new prince as A suitable heir. However, Merlin (Nathaniel Martello-White) senses the danger Arthur may bring in the future and tries to persuade Uther to recall him. Despite Merlin’s efforts, Arthur comes to terms with his new life in exile.
As Uther’s health deteriorates, Lady Morgan (Valen Kane) urges him to bring Arthur back to ensure good governance. Uther chooses to protect Arthur with the help of three defenders: Bishop Bedwin (played by Steven Elder), Owen (played by Daniel Ingalls) and Gundros (Simon Mayre) ers decoration). To ensure Ganderus’ loyalty, he must sever ties with his uncle Gorfed, a key step in his alliance with Queen Novenna.
However, Ganderlust’s dark past with DeFiel (Stewart Campbell), who massacred DeFiel’s family, taints this arrangement. Nimue (Ellie James), out of a sense of responsibility for her own personal happiness, prevents Defiel from attacking Ganderus. After Uther’s funeral, Defiel learned of Uther’s legendary victory at Kaer-Udaun, which earned him the nickname “The Great Red Dragon.” The kingdom mourns Uther’s absence and longs for his leadership. Queen Novena returned with the prince, but objected to marrying Ganderus. Nimue’s doom was imminent, and Ganderus came to Avalon with the young prince in his arms and a semblance of unity. Tragically, he brutally murders the baby, plunging the kingdom into chaos.
Ganderus’ army overwhelmed the natives and the kingdom fell into chaos. Nimue confronts Ganderus, but Defiel tries to intervene, but he is knocked unconscious. The evil beings allied with Ganderus subjected Nimue to unbearable torture, which was witnessed by the awakening Defiel. Fear escalates when they find themselves in a burning house and witness a brutal massacre of locals.
Returning to Avalon, Ganderus forced Queen Novenna to beg for mercy, then brutally killed her. He orchestrates a reign of terror, consolidates his rule, and appoints Radwes (Tajana Nardone) as his queen. Amid the chaos, DeFiere works to rescue Nimue, who is struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. Guided by the memory of Merlin’s protection from her as a child, Defiel works relentlessly to rescue her from the abyss of pain.

After Ganderus’ horrific actions, Nimue’s connection to the gods seemed broken, leaving her adrift in a world without hope. Nimue sees the other world as an escape from her pain, but her intentions are thwarted by DeFeel, who strongly objects to her risking his life. Amid the chaos, Lady Morgan and other Avalon residents come seeking refuge.
Among the new arrivals is a young woman holding a baby with deformed feet – a child who was sacrificed to ensure Prince Mordred’s safety. However, Gundros suddenly realizes: the baby he killed was not a prince. Prompted by this revelation, Ganderus directed his army in the direction of the column, which was expected to lead to Carcadane.
Unexpectedly, Arthur appears and becomes a beacon of hope against Ganderus’ malevolence. Arthur and his men rallied his army and quickly destroyed Ganderus’ soldiers, shining a glimmer of optimism into a secure kingdom.
Gundros insists on attacking Avalon, and a tenacious team composed of Queen Novenna, Delfir, and Nimue manage to escape the chaos. They travel through forests and grasslands, eager to reach the capital of Kerkadarn and gain the support of other lords. During their journey, a hidden truth is revealed: the supposedly deceased infant King Mordred is still alive.
The secret plan was hatched by a couple who had recently given birth in Avalon. In response to King Uther’s pleas, the couple vowed to protect Mordred in secret. So when Gundros demanded the child’s return, a replacement child was handed over, concealing the real Mordred.
Although the survivors manage to escape, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of their goals. Meanwhile, Ganderus realizes the shift and sends his troops to track down the survivors. Defiel struggles on this dangerous journey and is forced to make his first kill in the forest.

As The Winter King Episode 2 comes to a close, Gundros corners the survivors and demands the child. The group refuses to surrender and faces the imminent threat of annihilation by Ganderus’ forces.
