Sir Timothy Miles Bindon Rice was born on 10 November 1944 in Shadloss, Buckinghamshire, England, and is a distinguished English lyric poet and writer, best known for his prolific collaborations in musical theatre, film and television.
His notable collaborations include working with Andrew Lloyd Webber on iconic productions such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.
Rice also collaborated with ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson on “Chess,” with Elton John on “Aida,” and contributed to such Disney classics and live-action adaptations as “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
In 1994, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his significant contributions to the field of music. In addition to this honor, Rice has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame since 1999 and received the highly coveted Johnny Mercer Award in 2023.

- During World War II, Shardeloe was requisitioned as a maternity hospital.

- After the war, Hugh Gordon Rice worked for de Havilland Aircraft Company and later joined the diplomatic service, becoming the Far East representative and adviser to the Ministry of Overseas Development in Amman, Jordan.
- Rice’s mother, Joan Odette (née Bowden), was the daughter of a London fashion trade entrepreneur.
- Joan Odette served as a photographic interpreter in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during the war.
- In her eighties, Joan Odette gained recognition as a writer by publishing her wartime diary.
- Hugh Gordon Rice died in 1988, while Joan Odette lived until 2009.
