Warhammer 40,000 Wiki
Warhammer 40,000 is a very popular miniature war game produced by Games Workshop. It involves players fighting using miniature models of warriors and vehicles on a tabletop battlefield with various terrain features. The game utilizes dice and simple arithmetic to resolve battles between opposing forces.
The game’s fictional world is set in the distant future and depicts human civilization facing threats from hostile aliens and supernatural beings. The models in the game represent a variety of characters, including humans, aliens, and monsters, and they are equipped with futuristic weapons and supernatural abilities. The story and background of Warhammer 40,000 have been developed extensively through a series of novels published by Black Library, the publishing arm of Games Workshop.
Warhammer 40,000 is inspired by Warhammer Fantasy Battle, another war game produced by Games Workshop, although they exist in a different universe with different themes and concepts. Nonetheless, both settings share certain elements and themes.
The game’s popularity has spawned numerous spin-off media, including board games such as Space Hulk, which focused on combat within the confined space of an abandoned spacecraft, and Fleet Gothic, which simulated spaceship combat. In addition, video game adaptations such as the Dawn of War series have been released, further expanding the series’ reach and appeal. The 10th Edition rulebook launches in June 2023, marking the continued success and longevity of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Warhammer 40,000 gameplay
In the immersive gameplay of Warhammer 40,000, distances are measured using a tape measure since there is no grid system. The game begins with each player strategically placing their models in initial deployment areas at either end of the battlefield. To determine the starting player, roll the dice to determine who takes the first turn.

When a player’s turn begins, they can control the army’s models and manually move them onto the battlefield. The distance a model can move is limited by its “movement characteristics”, such as a Space Marine’s maximum movement distance of six inches per turn. Non-flying models must navigate around obstacles such as walls and trees.
The models are organized into “units” that move, attack, and take damage as a cohesive group. To keep the unit cohesive, all models within the unit must stay close to each other. Each model in a unit must end its turn within two inches of another model in the same unit. In larger units with more than five models, each model must be within two inches of the other two models.
Once the movement phase is complete, each unit can participate in combat. They can attack enemy units within range of their weapons and psychic powers, as well as sight range. For example, a Space Marine unit equipped with a “bolter” can shoot any enemy unit within 24 inches. Many of the game’s factions have units with psychic powers, giving them unique abilities such as making allies invulnerable or teleporting units onto the battlefield. A psyker unit can eliminate an enemy’s psionic power with a Deny Witch roll.
After using psychic powers, units can choose to rush into melee range to fight enemy units. Units engaged in melee combat will take turns attacking each other until all models have fought.
To resolve combat, the attacking player rolls dice to determine the amount of damage dealt to enemy units. However, they cannot directly target individual models within enemy units. Instead, the enemy player decides which models in the unit take damage. Damage is quantified in points, and a model will be eliminated from the battlefield if it takes more damage than its Wound Trait allows.
Most models have only one damage point, but some models (such as hero characters and vehicles) have multiple damage points, requiring careful tracking of accumulated damage. At the end of each turn, a die is rolled to determine the morale of the unit that lost the model.
Depending on the outcome, some units may lose morale and flee the battlefield, while others continue to fight. Then it’s the opponent’s turn, and the exciting cycle of movement, combat and strategy continues in the ever-changing and action-packed universe of Warhammer 40,000.
