What happened to the smiling animals in Poppy Playtime?
Poppy Playtime’s Smiley Animals are a popular line of plush toys from the Playtime Co. known for their big smiles and bright colors. Initially, the Smiley Animals were the main mascots for Playcare due to their popularity. These small, brightly colored plush-like animals have zippers on their chests, big smiles on their faces, and unique pendants that hint at their personalities.
The backstory reveals that the Smiling Critters were born and gained huge popularity, even having their own animated series. However, they became part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, and the stuffed toy CatNap from the series ended up giving off the wrong smell due to a production error, giving children nightmares.
CatNap was subsequently recalled, but on August 8, 1995, a tragic event called “Happy Hour” occurred, in which CatNap and the stuffed animals killed everyone in Playcare, including innocent people. In Chapter 3: Deep Sleep, the Smiley Critters appear in miniature versions as secondary antagonists. The leader DogDay undergoes a chilling transformation after encountering CatNap and the mini Smiley Critters.

The game’s climax unfolds in the theater, where the player encounters a much larger version of DogDay. Bound by chains and split at the waist, DogDay reveals himself to be the last surviving Smiling Critter.
Under the influence of CatNap, the Mini Smiling Critters devour DogDay from the inside out, resulting in a haunting death. This transformation and tragic death add a sinister layer to the narrative, emphasizing the forces of evil within the abandoned toy factory in Poppy Playtime.

Who is the smiling animal?
Poppy Playtime’s smiling critters are a beloved line of plush toys from Playtime Co., known for their bright colors and big smiles. These small anthropomorphic animals were introduced to the world through Project: Playtime, with a trailer released in Phase 2 and a full reveal in Chapter 3 of the game.
Each Smiling Critter is designed as a plush toy with a zipper on the chest, a big smile, and black eyes with white pupils. These adorable little animals each wear a unique pendant that hints at their individual personalities. Each little animal can emit its own unique scent from a hole in its mouth by pulling its tail, which adds a sensory experience.
The scents are inspired by various fruits, herbs or flowers, and are traditionally used to aid sleep or relaxation. The backstory of the smiling critters is that they became the main mascots of Playcare due to their popularity. However, they took a dark turn when they were incorporated into the Bigger Bodies Initiative, especially in partnership with CatNap.
During the creation of CatNap, an unfortunate production error occurred, resulting in the release of red smoke instead of lavender, causing nightmares in children. This led to CatNap being recalled and cancelled from the show, but not before participating in The Hour of Joy in 1995, where CatNap and the stuffed animals wreaked havoc in a tragedy that ultimately killed most of the cast.
In Chapter 3: Deep Sleep, the Smiling Critters return as secondary antagonists, while the Bigger Bodies versions of DogDay and CatNap take center stage. DogDay’s chilling transformation reveals a sinister fate for these once cheerful and lovable characters in the mysterious world of Poppy Playtime.
