Where to Watch Every Despicable Me & Minions Movie Online

While it joined the game much later than titans like Pixar or Disney, Illumination Entertainment has enjoyed near-equal success, starting with their first-ever project, Despicable Me. The original animated movie became a surprise box office hit thanks to a mixture of the cut little minions and a surprising amount of heart. Later installments generated ever more cash flow, and the series became the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time, with over $5 billion at the box office since its debut.

Despicable Me follows a supervillain-turned-hero named Gru, who goes from wanting to steal the moon to wanting to save the world and keep his family safe. On top of his three adopted daughters, he also has a wife and a new baby, a brother he never knew, and a ton of minions willing to serve him to the end. With movies about both Gru and all the various minions, all the Despicable Me movies are available to stream online, but the main problem is that they do not all share the same streaming home.

Illumination Entertainment’s debut feature film, Despicable Me, was released in 2010 and follows Gru, a supervillain who, after being consistently upstaged by his evil peers, decides to go for the biggest bounty imaginable: the moon. First, however, he has to steal a shrink ray from his main rival, Vector, which he cannot do until he adopts three young girls, small and stealthy enough to infiltrate Vector’s base. While he plans to use the girls to be pawns, he begins to find himself acting fatherly, even becoming attached to the trio as he questions his despicable lifestyle.

With Minions: The Rise of Gru being the latest, it’s time to rank each Despicable Me movie and take a look at what made them successful.

Critics praised the film, describing the story as rising above the animated fare and the performances as amusing but believable. However, some thought it was shallow and much less mentally challenging than the works of studios like Pixar or Dreamworks. Either way, it was an undeniable box office success, making over $540 million on a $69 million budget and establishing Illumination as a force to be reckoned with. It also introduced the Minions, characters that are now veritable pop culture icons.

Despicable Me is available to stream with a Peacock subscription. Peacock runs $7.99 monthly or $79.99 per year with ads. An ad-free experience costs an additional $6 a month or $60 a year.

While Illumination experimented with different ideas during the early 2010s, none were as successful as Despicable Me. Continuing the story made more than enough sense for the studio execs to green-light a sequel, Despicable Me 2, which was released in 2013. The story again follows Felonius Gru, though he’s no longer a supervillain. While he seems content with his modest home life, this changes once the Anti-Villain League recruits him to find a dangerous chemical substance capable of causing mutation, which a supervillain with dastardly intentions has stolen.

By now, The Minions were a big deal, and that, combined with the success of Pharrell Williams’ chart-topping, toe-tapping hit “Happy,” propelled the cinematic follow-up to massive box office success. It made $970 million, falling short of the billion-dollar mark but still accomplishing something completely unbelievable considering the film’s budget of just $76 million. Much like the first movie, Despicable Me 2 is also available to stream now on Peacock.

Illumination has single-handedly proven you don’t need to spend a lot of cash to make a blockbuster animated kids film, as they spent just $74 million to make this summer sensation, which raked in more than $1.1 billion during its theatrical run. Reviews weren’t as enthusiastic as viewers were towards the film (after all, it’s still marketed at kids first and foremost), but many were able to find solace in the top-notch music and visuals.

Unlike the first two Despicable Me movies, Minions streams on Netflix. The streaming giant offers various tiers for subscribers. The ad-supported tier costs $7.99 a month. The standard tier eliminates the ads and costs $17.99 monthly. Finally, a premium tier adds HD access for $24.99.

The franchise’s third installment follows Gru, who’s basically a superhero now, and his crime-fighting wife, Lucy. At the film’s opening, their failure to take down supervillain Balthazar Bratt led to their dismissal from the Anti-Villain League. Meanwhile, Gru finally meets his twin brother, Dru, who wants to become a supervillain himself. To recover a diamond stolen by Bratt, Gru teams up with Dru, convincing his brother that they’re stealing the diamond and not simply recovering it.

This latest entry delivered all the fast-paced slapstick, colorful, engaging visuals, and scattershot witticisms the original had to offer. Critics were obviously less enthused, with many citing a trend of mediocrity in Illumination’s cinematic offerings. Still, the film made over $1 billion on a budget of just $80 million. However, this is the one hardest to find when streaming out of the first four movies. Instead of the major streaming services, this is only available to stream on Fubo, which starts at $54.99 a month.

While the first Minions movie was the worst reviewed of the franchise, Illumination was quick to course correct by ensuring that the second movie would actually have Gru in it as well. While the film still lacked the heart that Gru’s extended family brings in the Despicable Me movies, seeing Gru as a child while teaming with the minions to battle the Vicious 6 was enough to bring something original and fun to the franchise for its fifth installment.

The movie grossed $940 million, the first to not break $1 billion since Despicable Me 2. However, reviews were much higher for this release than the first Minions movie, with critics praising the “retro chic” on display. This Despicable Me movie was on Prime Video but departed that streaming service in March 2025 and moved to Peacock, joining the first two franchise movies. However, with the third and fourth movies not there, it still requires fans to bounce around to see them all in order.
