Who is Bret Hart?
Brett Sergent Hart, born on July 2, 1957, is a Canadian-American retired professional wrestler from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. As a second-generation wrestler from the famous Hart wrestling family, Bret Hart has an amateur wrestling background cultivated at Ernest Manning High School and Mount Royal College.
His impact on professional wrestling, particularly in the early 1990s, was transformative, as he elevated the importance of technical in-ring performance and reshaped the perception of mainstream professional wrestling in North America.
In 1976, Bret joined Stampede Wrestling, founded by his father Stu Hart, initially as a referee, and made his debut in the ring in 1978. In the 1980s and 1990s, he won the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) Championship and led the Hart Foundation. Notably, after the controversial “Montreal Incident” in 1997, his career took a major turn and moved to World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

Bret Hart’s early life
- Bret Hart is the eighth child of wrestling veterans Stu Hart and Helen, and was born into the famous Hart wrestling family in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
- His grandmother was of Greek descent, his grandfather was of Irish descent, and his father, Stu Hart, was of Scottish, Irish, and English descent.
- Brett holds dual Canadian and American citizenship, as his mother, Helen, was born in New York. Despite this, he considers himself a proud North American and values both his American and Canadian citizenships.
- His maternal grandfather was Harry Smith, an accomplished long-distance runner.
- Brett had 11 siblings growing up: seven brothers — Smith, Bruce, Keith, Wayne, Dean, Ross and Owen — and four sisters — Allie, Georgia, Alison and Diana.
- Brett was particularly close to his brother, Dean, who was three years older than him. They often joked and fought with Brett’s two sisters, Ellie and Georgia.
- The Hart family adhered to a non-denominational Christian faith, and all of the siblings, including Brett, were baptized by a local Catholic priest.
- Brett spent most of his childhood at the Hart Family Mansion owned by his father. For a while, his father kept a bear named Terrible Ted under the mansion, and young Brett would occasionally let the bear lick ice cream off his toes.
- His early exposure to professional wrestling came when he witnessed his father training future wrestlers like superstar Billy Graham in the Dungeon (a training room converted from the family’s basement).
- Before school, Brett helped his father distribute flyers for local wrestling shows. In the documentary Killer Hart: Wrestling with the Shadow, Brett recalls his father’s rigorous training sessions and highlights Stu’s affable demeanor.
- Brett has been involved in wrestling since he was very young, and at the age of four he drew lucky numbers during halftime of a Stampede Wrestling show.
- As he got older, Bret began selling programs at wrestling shows, often competing with his brother Ross for customers as fans tended to buy programs from the youngest Hart child.
