- His father, William David Chappelle III, was a professor of vocal performance and dean of students at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
- Chappell’s mother, Yvonne Seong, worked for Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. She is a Unitarian Universalist minister who has served as a professor and college administrator at institutions including Wright State University and Prince George’s Community College.
- Chappelle was politically active while growing up, and visitors to his home included such notables as Pete Seeger and Johnny Hartman.
- During one of his visits, Johnny Hartman predicted that Chappelle would become a comedian. During this time, Chappelle drew inspiration from comedians Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.
