Born on July 31, 1951 in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia, she became one of the dominant figures in women’s tennis in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Goolagong’s remarkable tennis career began at the age of 19, when she won the French Open singles and Australian Open doubles titles with Margaret Court. Her prowess continued to shine in 1971 when she won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon. In 1980, Goolagong achieved a historic moment when she became the first mother in 66 years to win Wimbledon.

• Her father, Ken Goolagong, was a shearer and her mother, Melinda, was a homemaker.
• Evan was born in Griffith, New South Wales and grew up in the country town of Barreland.

• In 1965, Vic Edwards, the owner of a Sydney tennis school, became aware of Goolagong’s potential and traveled to Balleran to watch her play. Impressed, he convinced her parents to let her move to Sydney.
• Evonne attended Willoughby Girls High School in Sydney and obtained her High School Leaving Certificate in 1968.
• While in Sydney, she lived with the family of Vic Edwards, who became her legal guardian, coach and manager.
• This move to Sydney marked an important step in Goolagong’s tennis career and laid the foundation for her brilliant achievements in the sport.
