Toby Keith’s early life
- Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, to Carolyn Joan (née Ross) and Hubert K. Covel Jr.
- Growing up with his older sister and younger brother, the family originally lived in Fort Smith, Arkansas, when Keith was in elementary school. When Keith was still young, the family moved to Moore, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City.
- Before his family moved to Moore, Keith visited his grandmother in Fort Smith every summer, where her Billie Garner’s Supper Club sparked his interest in music. He began interacting with musicians, began playing in the bandstand, and got his first guitar at age eight.
- After settling in Moore, Keith attended Highland West Junior High School and Moore High School, where he played defensive lineman for the high school football team.
- After graduating from Moore High School, Keith entered the oil fields, starting as a derrick worker and working his way up to supervisor. At the same time, he pursued his dream of music and formed the band Easy Money with a friend at the age of 20. The band played in local bars and roadside inns, while Keith continued to work in the oil industry, sometimes suddenly leaving concerts if he was called to work in the oil fields.
- In 1982, the Oklahoma oil industry went into a downturn and Keith was out of work. He used his football training to play defensive lineman for the semi-pro Oklahoma City Drillers while still playing in a band. Although Keith tried out for the NFL’s Oklahoma Outlaws, he was undrafted and returned to music.
- Facing skepticism from family and friends, Keith persevered, and by 1984, the Easy Money Band, which included members Mike Barnes, TA Brauer and David Saylors, began to gain popularity on the country music circuit in Oklahoma and Texas.
