Who is Nicholas Quaid?
Nicholas Quaid (born 12 June 1989) is an Irish hockey player who currently serves as goalkeeper at inter-county level for the Effin club team and the Limerick senior hockey team.

Nicholas Quaid’s early life
Quaid, from Effin, County Limerick, was the second of three sons born to Tommy Quaid and Breda Grace. His father was a goalkeeper who finished second in the 1980 All-Ireland with Limerick. In addition, his grandfather Jack Quiid won a Munster Championship medal in 1955, while his cousin Joe Quiid was a goalkeeper who won the 1994 and 1996 All-Ireland final.

Nicholas Quaid’s playing career
University
While studying at Tralee Polytechnic, Quaid was active in the college’s senior hockey team. On 26 February 2011, he played as a midfielder to help Tralee IT defeat Carlow Institute of Technology 1-17 to 1-15 in the Ryan Cup final.

Quaid began his journey with the Effen club at a young age and progressed through the levels, playing in the junior and underage levels before finally joining the club’s junior team. On 31 October 2010, Quaid won the Limerick Youth Championship medal as Affin defeated St Kieran’s 1-16 to 1-10.
As a member of the Emets Division team, Quaid played as a midfielder in the Limerick Senior Championship final on 3 October 2010, where they were unfortunately defeated by Kilmallock.
Quaid’s performance as a centre-back for Effin in the Limerick Intermediate Championship final against Ballybrown on 25 September 2011 was noteworthy. In the subsequent Munster final victory over Ballyduff 0-14, 0-11, he received high recognition from the media for his outstanding performance.

Minors and under 21 years old
Quaid initially represented Limerick in minor hurling in 2006. However, his two-year career in that category ended with back-to-back Munster Championship defeats to Tipperary.
On June 5, 2008, Quaid made his debut for the Limerick Under-21 Hockey Team as a goalkeeper, helping the team defeat Watford 2-17, 1-07. Sadly, all three of his seasons at U-21 level ended with premature exits from the Championship.

Quaid was one of several new players recruited by the Limerick Senior Hockey team in 2010, replacing a number of players from the 2009 group who declined to play under head coach Justin McCarthy. He made his senior debut as a midfielder on 21 February 2010 in a National League One match against Galway at Fitzgerald Park, but the match ended in defeat. Quaid made his Championship debut on 20 June 2010 in a Munster Championship match against Cork, replacing Andrew Brennan in the 44th minute, resulting in another defeat.

With a number of regular players returning to the Limerick group in 2011, Quaid was one of the few retained but converted from outfield player to goalkeeper. On 30 April 2011, he won a National League Two medal as Limerick beat Clare 4-12 to 2-13 in the final.
Quaid’s performance during the 2012 season earned him an All-Star Award nomination. On July 14, 2013, in the Munster final, Quaid served as goalkeeper to help Limerick beat Cork 0-24 to 0-15.
On 9 December 2015, Quaid was appointed captain of the Limerick senior hurling team. His stoppage-time save on Séamus Harnedy’s shot in the All-Ireland semi-final on 30 July 2018 was named a “Sports Highlight of the Weekend” by Sports Illustrated. Quaid’s performance prevented a potential winning goal and was praised as a jaw-dropping play. On August 19, 2018, the Limerick team defeated Galway 3-16 to 2-18 in the final and won its first All-Ireland championship in 45 years. He was the goalkeeper. Quaid’s outstanding performance throughout the season earned him his second All-Star Award nomination.

Quaid was selected as goalkeeper for Limerick’s National League Final against Watford at Croke Park on 31 March 2019. He received a winners’ medal after Limerick won 1-24 to 0-19. On 30 June 2019, Quaid won his first Munster Championship medal in six years, beating Tipperary 2-26 to 2-14 in the final.

Quaid secured their second consecutive National League medal on 25 October 2020, beating Clare 0-36 to 1-23 in the delayed final. That same season, he won his second consecutive Munster Championship medal and the first of his career by keeping a clean sheet in the Munster final, a 0-25 to 0-21 win over Watford. Three medals. On 13 December 2020, Quaid won his second All-Ireland Championship medal by keeping a clean sheet in Limerick’s 0–30 to 0–19 win over Watford.
