O’Donoghue became a member of the Napias Racing Club at a young age and actively competed in all grade levels during his teenage years. He achieved championship success in the under-16, under-age and under-21 categories.
On 6 October 2013, O’Donoghue played as a right-wing forward and helped Napier win the Limerick Senior Championship, beating Adare 0–14 and 0–12. He was later moved to midfield at the Munster Championships and helped the team win a provincial medal with a convincing 4-14 to 0-08 victory over Sixmilebridge in the final.
O’Donoghue continued his success by winning his second Limerick Championship medal on 11 October 2015, beating Patrickswell 1-22 to 4-12 in the final. That same season, he won his second Munster medal after Na Piarsaigh beat Ballygunner 2-18 to 2-11. On 17 March 2016, O’Donoghue added an All-Ireland medal to his collection with a 2-25 to 2-14 victory over Ruairi Ogg in the final.
At the 2017 Championships, O’Donoghue claimed his third Limerick Championship medal after Napier beat Kilmallock 1-22, 2-14 in the final. Na Piarsaigh also won his third Munster Championship medal when he beat Ballygunner 3-15 to 2-10 in the final. However, in the All-Ireland final on 17 March 2018, Na Piarsaigh lost to Cuala.
