Why isn’t Fortnite on Apple?
Fortnite is no longer available to play on iPhone and iPad, and here’s why in a nutshell:
In August 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, where you can usually get the app for iPhone or iPad. However, if someone had downloaded Fortnite before it was removed, they can still play it, but they won’t get any new updates.
Now, Epic, the company that makes Fortnite, has decided that starting January 30th, players under the age of 18 will not be able to access the older version of the game (v13.40). That’s because this version doesn’t have the latest parental controls and verification that Epic wants to include. Epic says they can’t update the game properly because Apple doesn’t allow them to do so.

Epic has also discontinued the ability to use V-Bucks, Fortnite’s in-game currency. Apple got upset with Epic when they created a different payment method for V-Bucks that Apple didn’t allow. Apple wants all in-app purchases to be made through its own payment system.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney hinted on December 31 that something might happen to the iOS version of Fortnite next year. This may be related to rumors that Apple may allow other app stores to be installed on its devices. Epic and Apple are currently engaged in a legal battle over how much money Apple collects from app sales and other App Store rules. Epic lost the first round but is still trying to change the status quo through appeals.

Is Apple still banning Fortnite?
As of the latest news, Fortnite is still banned from the Apple App Store. Apple took this action because of a legal dispute with Epic Games, the developer of “Fortnite”. The conflict began last August when Epic Games tried to get around Apple’s 30% fee on certain in-app purchases by launching its own payment system.
The battle led to a court ruling in September, in which a judge ruled that an Apple App Store rule prohibiting developers from informing users of alternative payment methods was impermissible. However, the judge also mentioned that Epic Games did not prove that Apple was an illegal monopoly, but it did show some “anti-competitive behavior” under California law.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed on Twitter that Apple has extended its ban on “Fortnite” from the App Store until all appeals in the legal case are completed. This appeals process can take years. Despite this setback, Epic Games remains committed to fighting what they see as Apple’s “extraordinary anti-competitive conduct” in reshaping the market and influencing winners and losers.

Fortnite offers three game modes, each with its own flavor:
“Fortnite: Save the World”:
- Four player co-op mode.
- The story takes place in a world where a storm has destroyed most of the human population, and the survivors face zombie-like creatures.
- Players play the role of commander, collect resources, rescue survivors, and withstand the storm.
- Obtain in-game items such as hero characters, weapon schematics, and survivors through missions.
Fortnite Battle Royale:
- Player versus player mode can host up to 100 players and can be played solo, in pairs or in squads.
- Players parachute from a “battle bus”, search for weapons and eliminate others.
- Due to the poisonous storm, the map shrinks, forcing players to encounter each other, with the last or final squad winning.
“Fortnite” creative:
- Sandbox mode offers complete freedom.
- Players can spawn items from the battle royale on their personal islands.
- Create various games such as arenas, tracks and challenges.
In all modes, players gather resources to build structures for defense, traversal, or creativity. While Battle Royale and Creative are free, Save the World requires payment. The game uses V-Bucks for in-game purchases, earned through missions, or purchased with real money.
Why is Fortnite banned on Apple?
Fortnite was banned by Apple in 2020 when Epic Games tried to avoid Apple’s 30% fee on in-app purchases. Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, triggering a legal battle. Although the court ruled in Apple’s favor, gamers found a way to get around Apple’s ban by playing using cloud gaming services like GeForce Now and xCloud. This makes the ban less effective. Whether “Fortnite” will return to the App Store depends on the ongoing legal dispute and negotiations between Epic Games and Apple.
