Granblue Fantasy: Relink’s development journey began with the announcement of “Granblue Fantasy Project Re: Link” in August 2016. Initially, the game was a collaboration between PlatinumGames and Cygames. The project featured notable talents such as composers Nobuo Uematsu and Akira Narita, as well as artist Hideo Minaba.
The game was launched for PlayStation 4 in September 2016 and was initially set to be released in 2018. The game is set in the same fictional world as the original Granblue Fantasy and explores different locations while incorporating characters from the original game.
As development progressed, a first public demo was shown at GranBlue Fes 2017, revealing details such as the addition of four-player cooperative multiplayer, and the option to play alone with an AI companion. However, by February 2019, PlatinumGames withdrew from the project, leaving Cygames to take over the remaining development.
Yasuyuki Kaji, who has served as Relink’s director since the project began, continues to work with Cygames on the game. Although initially scheduled for release in 2018, the game faced delays, with its release date pushed back to 2022, then 2023, and finally to February 1, 2024, with a playable demo released on January 11, 2024.
