Tekken 8

Developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Arika, the fighting game Tekken 8 will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on January 26, 2024. As the eighth canonical work and the tenth work in the Tekken series, the game introduces the story mode “Dark Awakening”, which is set six months after the previous game. The story revolves around the final conflict between father Kazuya Mishima and son Jin Kazama, aiming to end the turmoil in their family.

Tekken 8 features 32 characters, each with their own story that contributes to the main plot, and introduces new mechanics such as the “heat” system and the “tornado” strike. Developed with Unreal Engine 5, the game was tested for stability and released a demo in December 2023. Tekken 8 received critical acclaim upon release, praising its progression of the series and radical gameplay, with some praising it as the best work since Tekken 3.

Tekken 8 Gameplay

Tekken 8 retains the familiar fighting game style of its predecessor, but has been significantly updated. The game introduces a more aggressive strategy, rewarding active attacks through a new system called “Heat”. While in the “Heat” state, characters will cause chip damage, unlock additional moves, and change certain move properties to encourage offensive play.

The “Rage” system returns, and has been altered to transform “Rage Drive” into “Heat Smash,” a powerful super move in the “Heat” system. Technical improvements include replacing the “Spiral” mechanism with a “Tornado” extender that affects the opponent’s status when they fall. Certain stages have hazards, such as breakable walls, adding a strategic element.

Tekken 8 aims to create a cinematic fighting experience that emphasizes stage destruction and character reactions. The game features new character models and voice acting, and introduces a new online mode called Arcade Missions, which features customizable avatars and a “Battle Currency” currency. Tekken 8 is powered by Unreal Engine 5 and is the first major fighting game to use the engine, a milestone.
